April 2016 - New SOLAS requirement effective 1 July 2016

New SOLAS requirement effective 1 July 2016

Dear Valued Customers,

To ensure the safety of the ship, the safety of workers both aboard ships and ashore, the safety of cargo and overall safety at sea, the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS), as amended, requires in chapter VI, part A, regulation 2 that packed containers' gross mass are verified prior to stowage aboard the ship.

The new SOLAS requirement will be enforced effective 1 July 2016.

In accordance with these new requirements the Merchant is ultimately responsible for the verification of the gross mass of a packed container carrying cargo using SOLAS Chapter VI, Regulation 2 (MSC.1/Circ.1475) guidelines. The Merchant is also responsible for ensuring that the verified gross mass is communicated to the Carrier in the shipping documents sufficiently in advance to be used by the ship's master or his representative and the terminal representative in the preparation of the ship stowage plan. Irrespective of its form, the document declaring the verified gross mass of the packed container should be signed and dated by the Merchant or by its duly authorized representative. The signature may be an electronic signature or may be replaced by the name in capitals of the person authorized to sign it. In the absence of the merchant providing the verified gross mass of the packed container, the Carrier reserves the right not to load the container on to the ship.

More detailed information and guidelines regarding the scope of applicability, main principles, methods for obtaining the verified gross mass of a packed container, documentation, enforcement and other related aspects can be found at:

ARRC Announcement of short sea Continent/Baltic service

Atlantic Ro-Ro Carriers is pleased to announce the opening of a new short sea liner service between Continent ports and ports in the Baltic sea with the launch of a Multi Purpose Geared Tweendecker of 6.300 mts DWT m/v “Langeland” as of 3rd February 2016.

The base ports will be Antwerp/Rotterdam and St. Petersburg, but with a possibility to make calls to other ports on facultative basis.

The service will be open for shipment of general breakbulk, bulk, metals and steel cargoes, oversized and heavy equipment, as well as containers.

It will upgrade our existing coverage between Baltic – Continent – USA ports and will facilitate transshipment options for our customer’s cargoes to/from destinations across the globe via the Port of Antwerp.

We look forward to continuing to serve our valuable customers as well as welcoming new customers on-board.

Operational work for new service will be provided by our St.Petersburg’s office.

For any additional information regarding this service, please contact local ARRC representatives.
